And in honor of the day, I nominate some version of this as a must-listen:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd87-12-31.schoeps.ewing.16436.sbeok.shnf

I'm sure it's not a “best" -- haven't given any thought to that particular question (and heading out the door anyway, since I am not, in fact, posting from where it's 2:44 a.m. ... my life is not nearly that exciting!) But it's a fun one, followed by more fun with Iko Iko, and New Year's Eve '87 is a sentimental favorite.

Better choice for the day than Loose Lucy or Jack Straw :-)

Any favorite versions of MSWS? Other choices for the day?

I love the prominent low end in the mix on the '87 NYE recording. Just what I needed on Women's Day ;)

I love how the presence of the kick drums and toms and Phil being his beautiful self serves this song and recoding. This is missing from the '82 show but there you get more Jerry and Bobby playing with the melody.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm really diggin' the part where the Neville Bros sit in. Plus, Jerry may or may not have played the solo on the original recording of Do You Wanna Dance? which makes this extra special! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk2zEYkSyHE

Don't forget Donna's great feminist classic, You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man:

Hah, good, we've got a women's club going here, on international women's day.

Perhaps we should declare it a no-Donna-bashing day ... despite the decidedly un-sisterly nature of You Ain't Woman Enough.

I'm here! In a house full of men, it's a dangerous thing to walk around singing "...that's right, the women are smarter, that's right..."...but, I still do! Happy International Women's Day!

LOL! all the more reason.
I live in a house full of men too, it's rough sometimes, it's an alien culture. What do they have to complain about? Hair in the shower drain? Whereas what we put up with ...

Au Contraire hirsute one! I am the one that fills the drain with hair...(bald, but not quite; it's got to go somewhere, right?).

Now, enough of disgusting tales of bathroom hygiene; I simply cannot understand why you gals haven't brought up the fact that some vertebrate girls have the balls (ovarian sorts) to have simply done away with boys, and take care of everything themselves (including pseudocopulation, proving that you don't even need "us" for sex, much less fertilization).

It is amazing to realize just how many of you all are hereabouts these days--does the boys club atmosphere come thru to the extent it did when you first arrived? Just curious--have you noticed any real change?

>Now, enough of disgusting tales of bathroom hygiene;

I'd cry "too much information" but I guess I started it:)

>I simply cannot understand why you gals haven't brought up the fact that some vertebrate girls

Who're you calling a vertebrate?! :)

>sorts) to have simply done away with boys, and take care of everything themselves (including pseudocopulation, proving that you don't even need "us" for sex, much less fertilization).

This has been a well-established fact too long to require reporting on here :) though I really don't know what pseudocopulation might be. No, don't explain, unless it's a lizard thing.

>It is amazing to realize just how many of you all are hereabouts these days--

You make it sound like we're some kind of invasive species.

>does the boys club atmosphere come thru to the extent it did when you first arrived? Just curious--have you noticed any real change?

I dunno, I wasn't here that long before other gals showed up. I don't really mind the boys club, like I say my household is also a boys club, all the talk is sports and cars and Great Battles of History. I'd have kept using my own name if someone hadn't replied "So D___, what do you look like?" to one of my posts and I figured it was easier to go with a gender-neutral handle than have to keep explaining that no one should get their hopes up, in addition to being very cozily married what I look like is a haggard old lady.

LOL that's about right, unfortunately.
Even though according to the latest research we are all-round harder working and better educated, worldwide, we still earn less. WAY less. And in many parts of the world, we can still be stoned or burned alive for "offenses" that men are totally permitted, or not allowed to walk down the street unless on the arm of a brother or husband.

Ok, off soapbox now ...

Just thought we needed a serious moment :) I'm afraid the Grateful Dead's great canon is not chock full of feminist statements. Yeah, there's Loose Lucy, and Bobby's love, whose "head's all empty" but he doesn't care (cringe...)

A good thought. With all the political and social turmoil in the Middle East, it does seem like an appropriate time to reflect on the role of women in society. Congrats to all you fine, fine ladies out there! I consider myself fortunate to know and work with so many brilliant, hardworking, professional women.

I always took that to mean his head, too. They're having high times by the river, with the blossoms blooming and all. I prefer my interpretation. Though it's true she's ditzy to pay all his tickets.

Yes, we menfolk let you ladies know (like always, right?) that Bob meant it in a self-referential fashion, and since we mean men love to bash Bob, well, it sorta just fits, eh?

Seriously (that's all ya need, Rob...you little needler you [ ;) ]), though--I think the three of us kicked it around once before...ya know, that he didn't mean his jeep girl. I'd never even considered he meant her til whomever it was that mentioned it (you mayhaps?) in that thread some time back...just goes to show how you can interpret so many lyrics in so many ways, you know?

What a set up! I refuse to be drawn into the one liner fray, having already asked for it elsewhere (assume you instantly recognized the appropriate response, for us 14 yr olds at heart, was "Radical? I don't think so...").

"Man Smart, Woman Smarter" indeed

"wouldn't be nothing without a woman or a girl"
Q4T

"Behind every good man is a great woman"

Amen, and without the woman behind me I'd either be incarcerated or dead. She saved my life, which I'm not sure she doesn't now regret, almost 40 years ago.

I love the U.N. Solving the worlds problems one edict at a time.
Actually, considering the treatment of women in so many countries, every tiny bit helps.

I do have a fav (!) of this song. A forgotten '85 show w/ a barn burner 2nd set. (Don't listen to the reviewer above me ;-)

Yes - Happy International Women's Day to all my sisters out there. International women are so great, I even married me a wife... who is an international woman. And she's been trouble all my life.... I'm in the long version of a transatlantic love affair. I'm American and my sweet wife of about 12 years is English, so we live in England.

Ship of Fools is really great from the 2nd set as well. The jam post Saint is also a highlight. From the first set, I really liked Little Red Rooster (surprisingly), Brown-Eyed Women which is smokin', and the powerful Cassidy.
